"Alone"
From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were -- I have not seen
As others saw -- I could not bring
My passions from a common spring --
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow -- I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone --
And all I lov'd -- I lov'd alone --
Then -- in my childhood -- in the dawn
Of a most stormy life -- was drawn
From ev'ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still --
From the torrent, or the fountain --
From the red cliff of the mountain --
From the sun that 'round me roll'd
In its autumn tint of gold --
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass'd me flying by --
From the thunder, and the storm --
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view --
"Spirits of the Dead"
Thy soul shall find itself alone
'Mid dark thoughts of the grey tomb-stone --
Not one, of all the crowd, to pry
Into thine hour of secrecy:
Be silent in that solitude
Which is not loneliness -- for then
The spirits of the dead who stood
In life before thee are again
In death around thee -- and their will
Shall then overshadow thee: be still.
For the night -- tho' clear -- shall frown --
And the stars shall look not down,
From their high thrones in the Heaven,
With light like Hope to mortals given --
But their red orbs, without beam,
To thy weariness shall seem
As a burning and a fever
Which would cling to thee for ever :
Now are thoughts thou shalt not banish --
Now are visions ne'er to vanish --
From thy spirit shall they pass
No more -- like dew-drop from the grass:
The breeze -- the breath of God -- is still --
And the mist upon the hill
Shadowy -- shadowy -- yet unbroken,
Is a symbol and a token --
How it hangs upon the trees,
A mystery of mysteries! --
"A Valentine"
For her this rhyme is penned, whose luminous eyes,
Brightly expressive as the twins of Lœda,
Shall find her own sweet name, that, nestling lies
Upon the page, enwrapped from every reader.
Search narrowly the lines! -- they hold a treasure
Divine -- a talisman -- an amulet
That must be worn at heart. Search well the measure --
The words -- the syllables! Do not forget
The trivialest point, or you may lose your labor!
And yet there is in this no Gordian knot
Which one might not undo without a sabre,
If one could merely comprehend the plot.
Enwritten upon the leaf where now are peering
Eyes scintillating soul, there lie perdus
Three eloquent words oft uttered in the hearing
Of poets, by poets -- as the name is a poet’s, too.
Its letters, although naturally lying
Like the knight Pinto -- Mendez Ferdinando --
Still form a synonym for Truth. -- Cease trying!
You will not read the riddle, though you do the best you can do.

Poem I chose: "A Dream"
Paraphrase:
I have seen the very dark night
I have dreamed of happiness leaving
But a day dream of life and light
Has left me broken-hearted.
Oh! Things that are not dreams during the day
To people who keep their eyes closed
to the things around them
and ignore the past.
That holy dream- that holy dream,
while everyone else was scolding,
has made me happy and gleaming.
I feel like my lonely spirit has company now.
What could it be that caused that happiness in storm and night,
so shaky from far away.
What could ever be more perfect
in truly perfect light?

Paraphrase:
Even as a young boy he was not like the others.
He didn't see what others saw
Common pleasures couldn't make him happy
He wasn't sad about the same things
He loved being alone
His sadness came from having a dark time in his childhood that he still doesnt not understand
He believed that all nature was a demon
S: Explaining his childhood

A: Idealistics
P: To explain why he is so dark

He is saying that he had a very different childhood, compared to what the other children had when he was growing up.
From things that have happened to him in the past, it left him with such sorrow that he couldn’t get over. And for everything he ever loved, he loved it alone.
He explains how his childhood wasn’t the greatest, and that there was a mysterious sickness going around in his family, and this mystery continues to “haunt” him.
He is talking about different places that describes how he feels.
He talks about the passing of a storm and how he doesn’t seem to notice it.
He explains how that everyone else was happy and “seeing Heaven”, he was depressed and was “seeing the demon in front of him”.

I have not been normal since childhood.
I do not see thing in the same way others do,
and I cannot pull any thoughts of love from a certain place in that time.
I have not shared my sorrow with anyone since childhood,
and because of that, it is hard for me to feel loved,
so all the times I have loved someone, it hasn’t been reciprocated.
Then, in my “childhood”, when I was almost happy, I was drawn to a person from every corner of my being, and their mysteriousness mystifies me still,
I love them from every good corner of the Earth,
And I love them from every bad corner of the Earth,
but, even still, its hard for me to love and be loved with all of my childhood baggage.
S: Edgar Allan Poe’s relationship with love

A: No specific audience; it didn’t/doesn’t really matter
P: to explain how it is hard for him to love because of his childhood

T: Sad and calm, composed

-Alone
Since I was a child I have not been
The same as others
I didn’t view the world as others did
My passion was not normal compared to many others
I wasn’t very happy
Everybody who I loved didn’t know I loved them
In my youth, which was the beginning of a very sad and dark life
Many people became ill, and died
While the world may look bright at times, to me all I saw was the darkness of the world
S-His views on his dark life
O-His younger youthful years of his life
A-Others who follow Gothicism
P-To inform others about his tragic life

I have not seen or done things the other children have done. My life has been different than other children. I’ve loved without being loved back. My life has been difficult no matter where I went there would still be hardships to face. These hardships would follow me wherever I went.

O - Harlem Renaissance
A - the people who made his life the way it is

As a child I was not the same as everyone else.
I saw different things
I had different passions
I was sad about different things
I was never as happy as others were
They all loved one another but I loved alone
In my childhood
In the beginning of a hard life
Was taken every piece of good and the mystery of life still holds me
When the sun around me was in the color of autumn gold
I felt like I was surrounded in a veil of darkness

ReplyDelete“Eldorado”
A very showy Knight
in light and dark
looked for a long time
singing a song
Looking for Eldorado
Even though he was bold he got old
and started to lose hope
wherever he looked he couldn’t find Eldorado
He started getting weak
he saw a man
and asked if he knew where Eldorado was
A very long way away
and hard to reach
if you still want to try
go and go strong
If you seek for Eldorado
Subject: The knight in search of Eldorado
Occasion: written during the gothic era but could be place anywhere in time the Knight suggests in the middle ages
Audience: The audience could be anyone but it seems more geared to younger children.
Purpose: To teach the audience that if you don’t give up even when it seems impossible you will find what you’re looking for.
Speaker: The speaker of this poem is a narrator, this could be Poe but is not specified.
Tone: The tone of this poem is somewhat down but not sad and then in the end it turns up.
