Poem Selection and Explication Activity

After you have read Poe's biography and commented 2-3 interesting details about his life, please spend some time browsing the following poems. You will need to select one of the poems and do a close reading of that poem (read, paraphrase, and identify SOAPSTone). Please read these instructions carefully (ALL THE WAY THROUGH BEFORE BEGINNING) so you know what to do.

  1. Select a poem.
  2. Open up a word document or Google doc and copy and paste the poem into that document.
  3. Read the poem and write your paraphrase of the poem in that same document. Remember that your paraphrase should be like a translation of the poem into your own words (some lines don't need to be paraphrased if they are easily comprehended).
  4. Identify the SOAPSTone of the poem (type it in the document).
  5. Copy your paraphrase and SOAPSTone and paste it into a comment for this post. Remember to include your name in your post, and please also tell me the name of the poem you chose to work with.
Here are the poems you can choose from:

"Alone"
From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were -- I have not seen
As others saw -- I could not bring
My passions from a common spring --
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow -- I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone --
And all I lov'd -- I lov'd alone --
Then -- in my childhood -- in the dawn
Of a most stormy life -- was drawn
From ev'ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still --
From the torrent, or the fountain --
From the red cliff of the mountain --
From the sun that 'round me roll'd
In its autumn tint of gold --
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass'd me flying by --
From the thunder, and the storm --
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view --

"Spirits of the Dead"
Thy soul shall find itself alone
'Mid dark thoughts of the grey tomb-stone --
Not one, of all the crowd, to pry
Into thine hour of secrecy:
Be silent in that solitude
Which is not loneliness -- for then
The spirits of the dead who stood
In life before thee are again
In death around thee -- and their will
Shall then overshadow thee: be still.

For the night -- tho' clear -- shall frown --
And the stars shall look not down,
From their high thrones in the Heaven,
With light like Hope to mortals given --
But their red orbs, without beam,
To thy weariness shall seem
As a burning and a fever
Which would cling to thee for ever :

Now are thoughts thou shalt not banish --
Now are visions ne'er to vanish --
From thy spirit shall they pass
No more -- like dew-drop from the grass:

The breeze -- the breath of God -- is still --
And the mist upon the hill
Shadowy -- shadowy -- yet unbroken,
Is a symbol and a token --
How it hangs upon the trees,
A mystery of mysteries! --

"A Valentine"
For her this rhyme is penned, whose luminous eyes,
Brightly expressive as the twins of Lœda,
Shall find her own sweet name, that, nestling lies
Upon the page, enwrapped from every reader.
Search narrowly the lines! -- they hold a treasure
Divine -- a talisman -- an amulet
That must be worn at heart. Search well the measure --
The words -- the syllables! Do not forget
The trivialest point, or you may lose your labor!
And yet there is in this no Gordian knot
Which one might not undo without a sabre,
If one could merely comprehend the plot.
Enwritten upon the leaf where now are peering
Eyes scintillating soul, there lie perdus
Three eloquent words oft uttered in the hearing
Of poets, by poets -- as the name is a poet’s, too.
Its letters, although naturally lying
Like the knight Pinto -- Mendez Ferdinando --
Still form a synonym for Truth. -- Cease trying!
You will not read the riddle, though you do the best you can do.

"Eldorado"
GAILY bedight,
A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado.

But he grew old --
This knight so bold --
And o'er his heart a shadow
Fell as he found
No spot of ground
That looked like Eldorado.

And, as his strength
Failed him at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow --
"Shadow," said he,
"Where can it be --
This land of Eldorado?"

"Over the Mountains
Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,"
The shade replied, --
"If you seek for Eldorado!"

    Poem I chose: "A Dream"
    Paraphrase:
I have seen the very dark night
I have dreamed of happiness leaving
But a day dream of life and light
    Has left me broken-hearted.

Oh! Things that are not dreams during the day
To people who keep their eyes closed
    to the things around them
    and ignore the past.

That holy dream- that holy dream,
    while everyone else was scolding,
has made me happy and gleaming.
I feel like my lonely spirit has company now.

What could it be that caused that happiness in storm and night,
    so shaky from far away.
What could ever be more perfect
    in truly perfect light?

    SOAPSTone:

  2. I found it interesting that Edgar married his cousin when she was only 13. I also thought that it was interesting that he served in the U.S. military and achieved a high rank. Finally I never actually knew that as a writer he struggled. -Riley Fay

    “Eldorado”
A knight day after day his whole life searched for a place called Eldorado.

But, as he grew older, he could not continue searching. His heart gave out one day and he fell to the ground, never finding a sign of Eldorado.

As he fell, he saw a figure and asked where Eldorado is.

The figure tells him that it is an impossible journey through the mountains and through a valley and if he continued to try he would have to ride boldly.

the paraphrased version that i just posted is really confusing to read, oops :P
and i couldn't find a way to delete it so here is a less confusing paraphrased version of the poem "Alone"

Since Poe was a child he was
      different, he didn’t have the
same point of view as others.
He was not passionate, nor felt
sorrow for the same things other

joy for common things. He had no

    "Alone" paraphrase
Since he was a child he has always been different. He saw and did things differently has the other kids. Even though he has siblings from the same parents they have all been through different things and feel differently. Deep down he has always been a sad person and his heart always feel the same. Everything he has loved he has loved alone.since the very beginning he has always had that sadness in his life. And for everything he did that was good, the sadness found it way to him taunting him at all times. Throughout his life he always felt like there was something there that caused this depression. 29. How do you feel about Edgar Allan Poe's poetry? Do you like it? Why or why not?

I feel his writing is happy and sad because it seems upbeat and good at first, then it is slow and sad. I like it because it keep the story interesting and keeps me in it.

Throughout my entire childhood I haven’t been where the rest of the kids have. I didn’t see what other children saw. I couldn't share my love for a common spring. I was sad for different reasons than the other kids. I couldn't feel joy the same way. I showed love alone. Then in the dawn of my stormy life was from every bit of good and ill, the mystery that still holds me back. From all the tears I shed. From the long distance between me and others like a red cliff of a mountain. From the bright golden sun that rounded the planet over and over past me every day. From the lightning in the sky that came by. From the thunder, the storm, and the cloud that took the form of a demon right in front of me.

He is saying that he had a very different childhood, compared to what the other children had when he was growing up.

From things that have happened to him in the past, it left him with such sorrow that he couldn’t get over. And for everything he ever loved, he loved it alone.

He explains how his childhood wasn’t the greatest, and that there was a mysterious sickness going around in his family, and this mystery continues to “haunt” him.

He is talking about different places that describes how he feels.

    "Alone"

I have not been normal since childhood.
I do not see thing in the same way others do,
and I cannot pull any thoughts of love from a certain place in that time.

I have not shared my sorrow with anyone since childhood,
and because of that, it is hard for me to feel loved,
so all the times I have loved someone, it hasn’t been reciprocated.

Then, in my “childhood”, when I was almost happy, I was drawn to a person from every corner of my being, and their mysteriousness mystifies me still,

I love them from every good corner of the Earth,

And I love them from every bad corner of the Earth,
but, even still, its hard for me to love and be loved with all of my childhood baggage.
